Get real-time updates from Twitter on your Google search results

Twitter is increasingly becoming a threat to Google, in the form of Search. Other than Google, people also started looking at Twitter as alternative. In some cases, the first choice is Twitter. No wonder, Twitter made it’s impact with it’s real-time search.

Real-time search is the in thing. Recently, I have come across news where people have been rescued by searching there information on Twitter along with a GPS device. An other example of a real time Search can be found in this Telegraph article.

Having said the importance of real time search results and Twitter in the search arena, here is an interesting Greasemonkey script developed by Mark Carey of MT-HACKS. When implemented/installed, this script will show the most relevant 5 tweets for the search query entered in Google. The results will be displayed at the top. This will have no impact on your Google search results. Moreover, you will have real-time search results and Google results both on the same page.

How to install this Greasemonkey Script in Firefox?

  1. Install the Greasemonkey Firefox plugin which lets you customize a web page with JavaScript.
  2. Visit Twitter Search results on Google and click on the INSTALL button.

If you want to install this on Opera, please read the instructions below.

  1. Installing Scripts in Opera.
  2. Supported Greasemonkey Scripts in Opera.

Twitter has still a long way to go before it can overtake Google as the top Search Engine. Twitter may work better in the case of real-time search. But for programmers, developers and many other professionals, Google is the favorite.

We have seen browser wars between Firefox, IE, Opera, Chrome. Do we get to see the Search Engine wars between Google and Twitter in the future?

Great find. If twitter is really becoming a threat, then google will try to acquire it like it acquired lots of good software companies :)

Thats so true! Google have blocked out so many, hopefully twitter we be on the front like wikipedia. Linking to them would be weird, but not surprising.

Google are trying to acquire Twitter. Give it a Google.

Thanks and keep it up.

I still really don’t get Twitter for what you are speaking about. However everyone thinks its the bomb, but most of my friends are still on Facebook with the same ability, but with much more options. Maybe I am naive, but I don’t think google has anything to worry about.

That is correct people are using twitter as an alternative for google which is not good news for google but I am sure they will come up with something.

I think calling it a “threat” to Google is a bit too strong. It’s a development, sure, but by the time it’s fully integrated into how people search day to day, Google will find a way to match the service.

I think Google is targeting IE specifically because it has always sucked. I’ll prove it, go to google and see the difference in the page while you have it open in IE and when you have it open in Firefox.. See a difference?

Twitter may have Google beat at real-time searching but they have a long way to go if they want to “upset” the Big G.

Google may buy Twitter and if that happens, then we can expect the Google search experience to become a whole lot better.

Tweet tweet tweet!
I am starting to like it.

Thank you very much for sharing this.
I’ll soon install my plugin soon.

thanks again.

For the real time searches, twitter as aligned with the Bing and as formed a new search engine for realtime search i.e bingtweets.com wherein we can also see the major trending topic of the day, so you can get both at one place the real time searches and the searches for the normal things.Ya twitter has a long way to go before it beats Google and its popularity but we can say its progressing fast.

That’s pretty sweet! Will give that a go!

For google or bing the customer base is worthe a lot. lot-o-eyeballs. But, it has limited value as information resource. Its a game. If you like it great.

Twitter has more value as part of a larger network as opposed to remaining independent.

I can see that you’re receiving a lot of love from webmasters for this post!

Twitter is very useful social networking site which helps to bring traffic and by indexing in the search engine i think it will also help in increasing the SERP.

I’m glad there are some blogs out there who appreciate the time.

Hey i think this is great, you mean now we can just search for any keyword into Google SE and get updates of him/her directly from twitter, that’s really exciting.

it’s a good post for the latest social media network.(tweeter)

Thanks

Looks like an interesting plugin, but I recently read that Google and Bing have both teamed up with Twitter to provide real-time searches.

I’m still not convinced about the value of these types of results though, because generally they’re just from any old person talking about a subject. I prefer to get my information from a more widely-recognised ‘authority’ source. Still, we’ll see, maybe Google will find a way to make it work!

Hey I never knew if such things could be done too, but what about other social networking sites, can we do such things with Facebook and with Digg too ?

I don’t think I’ve ever used twitter for search, I’ve been so used to google that I wouldn’t trust any other search engine.

To be honest, I am not a big fan of Twitter, but I must say it does come in handy for following current event trends, especially ones that deal with technology. There have been a few times when most of the media hadn’t jumped on a story yet, but I was able to search Twitter and find out some info about it. Might have to check out the script, cause there are certainly some times when it would come in handy…

I’ve gotta say that I regularly use twitter for marketing campaigns and it works out really well. You just need the right (relevant) followers. So I can’t agree to @Jacob. ;)

As you see this will make a twitter a big thing in seo , prolly google is showing its results in google real time search will actually catapult twitter to something bigger then google which will be a major communication tool , marketing tools and info search tools
and will also act as a instant journalism tool

I use Google for all my searches. I know things keep changing and it’s important to stay on top of all the new technology to keep pace. I’ll need to look at Twitter a little more.
thanks for the info.

I don’t want my personal feeds showing up on Google. Not a big fan of real-time search results from Twitter.

Good post. I think we can only wait and watch what Google does for this!

i not use twitter so much
