Twitter is increasingly becoming a threat to Google, in the form of Search. Other than Google, people also started looking at Twitter as alternative. In some cases, the first choice is Twitter. No wonder, Twitter made it’s impact with it’s real-time search.

Real-time search is the in thing. Recently, I have come across news where people have been rescued by searching there information on Twitter along with a GPS device. An other example of a real time Search can be found in this Telegraph article.

Having said the importance of real time search results and Twitter in the search arena, here is an interesting Greasemonkey script developed by Mark Carey of MT-HACKS. When implemented/installed, this script will show the most relevant 5 tweets for the search query entered in Google. The results will be displayed at the top. This will have no impact on your Google search results. Moreover, you will have real-time search results and Google results both on the same page.

How to install this Greasemonkey Script in Firefox?

Install the Greasemonkey Firefox plugin which lets you customize a web page with JavaScript.

Visit Twitter Search results on Google and click on the INSTALL button.

If you want to install this on Opera, please read the instructions below.

Installing Scripts in Opera.

Supported Greasemonkey Scripts in Opera.

Twitter has still a long way to go before it can overtake Google as the top Search Engine. Twitter may work better in the case of real-time search. But for programmers, developers and many other professionals, Google is the favorite.

We have seen browser wars between Firefox, IE, Opera, Chrome. Do we get to see the Search Engine wars between Google and Twitter in the future?

Is Safari ready to become the Favorite browser for the Blogging Community?

On 24 Feb’09 Apple launched the much awaited version of it’s Safari 4 Browser in Beta Version. With this, Apple claims to be the fastest web browser ever.

Here are some of the Key new features

Windows Native Look and Feel- When run on Windows Safari makes itself look just like any other Windows application.

Top Sites – Safari remembers the last 24 websites that you visited and presents them as a Thumbnail in a single page. You can customize it.

Cover Flow – Provides a visual way of reviewing your site history and bookmarked sites. This view is similar to what is available in iTunes.

Tabs on Top – Just like in Firefox or Google chrome, provides with Tabs which have Drag and Drop feature.

Nitro Engine – This is one of the feature that distinguishes it from the rest of the browsers. Using the Nitro Engine, Safari claims to execute JavaScript up to 30 times faster than Internet Explorer 7, 3 times faster than Firefox 3. It also claims to load web pages 3 times faster than IE 7 and almost 3 times faster than Firefox 3.

Provides many other features for Developers. We will have to wait and watch if it can attract more developers to write plugins like in Firefox 3.

Acid 3 compliance – Which means this browser has passed the CSS, XML, JavaScript, and SVG Standards.

No new feature on Security and Privacy is added in this version.

Download Safari 4 Beta

With all the above features in place one still need to wait and watch to see if it can take over Firefox. Is Safari poised to become the favorite Browser for the blogging community? Will it survive in the competition of the Browser Wars?

Zemanta on Gmail from zemanta on Vimeo.

Zemanta, a very useful utility and a wonderful tool which helps you write emails like news articles with ease. When used with WordPress, it also enhances your blog posts by adding useful links and images to your blog posts automatically. Currently works only with Y!Mail, Gmail and WordPress.
Zemanta finds and adds(only if you wish) interesting images, relevant links and related articles to your emails and/or blog posts very fast.

Here is how it works

Once installed, a small button is added to the top of your email and also in your WordPress editor.

Zemanta goes through what you have written and finds you related articles, relevant links and interesting images that can be used in your emails and posts.

Why you should use Zemanta with WordPress?

Zemanta automatically suggests the targeted tags you need for search engine optimization. Just click your selections and you’re done.

Adds other important links based on the content so that your readers have all the important links in one place.

Attract more readers to your post by linking to similar topics on other sites.

Copyright issues are taken care by Zemanta.

I’m sure you normally spend 20-30 min/post approx. to find related links, related stories, images and tags for your posts. Zemanta does the same in 2-3 seconds.

Why you should use Zemanta with Gmail or Yahoo Mail?

This tiny piece of software transforms your browser into an interactive, full-screen “cinematic” experience web media.

What is Cooliris?
Cooliris, formerly PicLens, turns your browser into a visually stunning, lightning fast way to search, discover, view and share online photos, videos and more. It’s innovative “3D Wall” lets you effortlessly zoom your way around thousands of items on a single ever expansive 3D wall.

Why do you need Cooliris?
This question can be better answered only with an example. Now, let’s say you want to search for Images of Beautiful scenery in Google Images. You will do a Google Image Search with the key words ‘Beautiful Scenery’ and Google displays hundreds or thousands of web pages. One cannot say only the top rated ones are shown in the first few pages and the lesser rated ones in the rest of the pages. At least, I will not agree in the case of Image Search.

If I have to do the same thing with Cooliris. I follow these steps.

Install Cooliris plugin available for any of the browsers Mozilla, IE, Safari and Flock. Check this page for more details on browser compatibility. Mozilla Firefox Cooliris add-on link.

Launch Cooliris in Firefox (as I installed it on Firefox).

The search box is available at the top right corner of the Cooliris application. I select Google from the list and then search for the same key words “Beautiful Scenery”.

Here is the main difference. All the images are shown in single never ending 3D Wall as against page by page in the browser.

Now, I can select any image that I need and can get the Permalink of the image just by a single click.

Do read the complete article without fail!

The Stunning Features

3D Wall
Displays content (Images, Videos) on a single wall rather than the traditional way of clicking the “next” button page by page.

Visual News
Surf the latest news, sports, entertainment and technology news using it’s Discover feature.

Search
The search function available on the 3D Wall lets you search Images from Google Image Search, YouTube, Flickr, Hulu and other sites in the fastest way possible.

3D Window Shopping
This feature allows you to Window shop some of the world’s largest retailers. One can compare products visually on the 3D Wall and see more details on the product or directly jump to the Product Page of the retailer.

Favorites
The best items of your choice in Cooliris can be added to your own custom feed.

Works with Thousands of sites
Built around the industry standard Media RSS format, it supports hundreds of sites on the web. This include Google, Yahoo, MSN, Live, Ask, AOL Images and sites like Facebook, Flickr, Fotki, Hi5, Friendster, MySpace, Picasa Web Albums, YouTube, Kodak Gallery and almost all of the available online photo albums available in the market.

Other Options

You can enable your own Sites/Blogs using the Media RSS. What is this Media RSS? It is an open standard for syndicating multimedia content. For more information , visit Cooliris Developer.

Cool Previews – This is another simple Firefox add on, which enables you to view the content of a particular web link without clicking it. For instance, I pointed my mouse at the link enrectangled in RED. I could see the content without actually clicking it. Firefox CoolPreviews add-on link.

No matter how much I talk about this Wonderful Media Rich application, there is still lot more to it. I would suggest, you install this 3 MB add-on to your Firefox browser and experience the difference yourself. Do let me know how you fell once you install it.

Opera has released their latest version of the desktop browser 9.6 on 8 Oct’08. With this release it has also targeted the Indian market by making the browser available in Hindi, Telugu and Tamil.

Besides this, the new features are something to be looked at. Let’s have a look at some of the coolest features.

Latest features in Opera 9.6

Opera link

Lets us synchronize custom search engines and type history. What it means is, any website address we typed in one computer will be available in all our other computers. Typed History is only the history we explicitly type or select from the address bar.

Feed Preview

Provides the option to view the RSS/Atom feed before subscribing or even book marking it. The view has a clean and efficient layout formatted for our window size.

Speed Enhancement

This version has faster page loading than the previous versions.

Opera Mail

Follow/Ignore threads or contacts

Follow and Ignore are new features for users that receive numerous messages. It makes it easier to dismiss unimportant messages and easier to recognize important messages.

Activate this feature by selecting Follow/Ignore in the email context menu (or click the message subject header), then select either Follow Thread or Ignore Thread.

Also, we can click the names in the From or To headers to enable the following or ignoring of contacts.

Go To Thread

We can now also use “Go to thread” which means that we can view only the messages from that thread. This is useful for those that employ flat view.

Low Bandwidth Mode

Low Bandwidth Mode is a setting on mail accounts that makes Opera Mail use as little bandwidth as possible. These settings vary for both IMAP and POP.

For IMAP, it will only synchronize new messages and will not fetch message attachments unless requested.

For POP, it will not fetch more than the first 100 lines of a message unless requested

This way it reduces the data downloads as much as possible enabling us to check the email faster when on move.

Opera Scroll Marker

The Scroll Marker makes it easier to continue reading when we scroll through the page. It will also indicate the previous position of the bottom of the screen at the end of the page so that we can easily see where to continue reading.

Using the opera:config Preferences Editor, we can also set Opera Scroll Marker to show every time we scroll less than a full page down or up. These are the options available.

0 – off

1 – show when reaching the bottom or top of the page

2 – always show when scrolling
