Some of the free antivirus softwares are starting to struggle with providing effective virus protection as of now (Autumn 2009). Also, even the paid softwar is struggling with detecting/preventing rootkit infections. It seems like the Antivirus companies are lagging a bit behind the hackers at this point in time…

avast! Home edition is the antivirus I recommend to everybody looking for free pc security shield. It’s much lighter on resources than Avira and AVG (I’m using it currently on Pentium III – who remembers those old boxes now?), is skinnable (not of much importance, but some freaks are paranoid about customizing everything they click on) and updates itself every day. Very unobtrusive software unless you visit suspicious websites – then avast! will block it from loading. Works smoothly together with SUPERAntiSpyware (I got a lifetime license from the developers as a gift so why not try this app out).
