Best Free Disk Defragmenter

Performance issues with Computers is the common thing among most of the users. We often ignore some simple maintenance activities which can actually boost the system performance by even 100%.

If keeping the junk away from your system is one activity, then defragmenting is the other.

A disk defragmenter is a key toolkit element for keeping your PC running optimally. Disk fragmentation occurs through normal everyday use of your PC; over time your system becomes unable to store related data on your disk in a sequential (contiguous) manner, and must “fragment” files across different physical locations on your hard drive. This increases the number of times your hard drive must spin (or “seek”), which slows down the process of reading and writing files. Defragmentation software compresses files and free space back into contiguous blocks.

Defragmenting your hard drive on a regular basis is a sound housekeeping habit; a chore that most home users should do once a month.

Windows operating system certainly comes with a Defragmentation utility and you can access it through the Accessories-System Tools-Disk Defragmenter path. But this utility is not effective and the performance improvement is little. There are external utility software which are extremely good at this task and are proven. Defraggler, JkDefrag & Contig are your choices.

As a non-techie, I wouldn’t know which one to use. Do you think one is better than the other?
thanks anyway, because I think I do need something like this.

@Nihar, I will give Auslogic a try. Never heard about it though. But, this Defraggler is good.

@Sheila, I suggest you use Defraggler and simply forget about the rest.

I don’t mean to be a nag lol, but what’s the proof that the built in defrag is no good?

@Dennis, I emailed you the proof that you have asked for. I will not be able to explain it here :)

If anyone else is looking for a detailed explanation, please drop a comment!

I had always trusted the one that came with windows. I appreciate the reviews. Do Macs not need to be defragmented? I have a mac and a PC, and my mac doesn’t have any defragmenting software on it.

@Agathe, Mac need to be Defragmented. It uses a different file concept which makes it superior in this case.

@Dennis, you are most welcome!

I haven’t noticed any real improvement from a windows system defrag.

Is this program better than the O&O Defragmenter?

I’ve got the full version of Diskeeper08. It can be set to run in the background without affecting other functions and also defrags thoroughly and fast. I also wanted a program that defrags the MFT and it does a great job, havent regretted purchasing this piece of software.
Do any of the above mentioned utilities defrag the MFT?

Hmmm… As a relative beginner to photographry I frequently feel swamped by the amount of information I need to learn. Nevertheless, the more i read posts like this, the better off i am. Thanks for making me think a bit more.
